Skin Prep for Flawless, Long-Lasting Makeup

If there’s one thing I wish more people understood about makeup…

It’s that flawless, long-lasting makeup doesn’t start with foundation.

It starts with your skin.

The way your skin is prepped will determine:

  • how your makeup applies

  • how it wears throughout the day

  • how it looks in photos

And the best part? It doesn’t have to be complicated.

When skin prep is done correctly, your makeup looks smoother, lasts longer, and feels better.

Why Skin Prep Matters More Than Foundation

A lot of people think long-lasting makeup comes down to using the “right” foundation.

But even the best products won’t perform well if your skin isn’t properly prepped.

When your skin is:

  • too dry → makeup clings and looks textured

  • too oily → makeup breaks down faster

  • unbalanced → products separate or don’t sit correctly

Skin prep creates the foundation for your foundation.

My Go-To Skin Prep Routine (Step-by-Step)

This is the exact structure I follow with my brides and clients to create that smooth, long-wearing, skin-like finish.

1. Gentle Cleanse (Start Fresh)

Even if you washed your face earlier, a quick cleanse removes:

  • excess oil

  • leftover skincare

  • any buildup on the skin

What to use:

  • A gentle, hydrating cleanser (nothing stripping)

Pro Tip: Avoid foaming cleansers right before makeup—they can leave the skin too dry.

2. Hydrating Mist or Toner (Balance the Skin)

This step brings your skin back into balance and adds that first layer of hydration.

What to use:

  • Hydrating facial mist

  • Alcohol-free toner

Look for ingredients like:

  • glycerin

  • rose water

  • hyaluronic acid

3. Targeted Skincare (Customize for Your Skin)

This is where we adjust based on what your skin actually needs.

Examples:

  • Dry skin → lightweight hydrating serum

  • Dull skin → brightening serum (vitamin C)

  • Textured skin → smoothing serum

Pro Tip: Keep layers thin. Too much product = makeup slipping later.

4. Moisturizer (Lock It In)

This step is non-negotiable.

Hydrated skin = smoother application + better wear.

What to use:

  • Lightweight moisturizer for normal/oily skin

  • Richer cream for dry skin

Goal: Skin should feel hydrated—not greasy.

5. Eye Cream (Smooth + Brighten)

Under-eyes are one of the first places makeup creases.

What to use:

  • Lightweight, smoothing eye cream

Pro Tip: Let it absorb fully before concealer to avoid creasing.

6. Lip Prep (Don’t Skip This)

Dry lips can completely change how your makeup looks overall.

What to use:

  • Hydrating lip balm

  • Gentle lip exfoliation if needed

7. Primer (Strategic, Not Overdone)

Primer is where a lot of people go wrong—they either skip it or use too much.

Primer should be used intentionally based on your skin.

Examples:

  • Pore-smoothing primer → T-zone

  • Hydrating primer → dry areas

  • Gripping primer → areas where makeup fades fastest

Pro Tip: You don’t need primer everywhere.

The Biggest Mistakes That Ruin Makeup Longevity

Even with good products, these are the things that will break your makeup down the fastest:

  • Using too many heavy skincare layers

  • Not letting products absorb before makeup

  • Skipping moisturizer

  • Overusing primer

  • Trying to “fix” dryness with more foundation

What Flawless Skin Prep Actually Looks Like

When your skin is prepped correctly:

  • your makeup applies evenly

  • you use less product

  • your skin still looks like skin

  • your makeup lasts for hours without breaking down

And most importantly—you feel comfortable.

Not heavy. Not cakey. Not like you’re wearing a mask.
