Bridal Makeup in Columbus: Questions I Get Asked All the Time
Planning a wedding comes with a million decisions, and your bridal makeup shouldn’t be one of the stressful ones. As a Columbus-based bridal makeup artist, I get a lot of the same questions from brides, so I pulled them together in one place to help you feel informed, prepared, and excited for your glam.
How early should I book my bridal makeup artist in Columbus?
Short answer: as early as you can. In Columbus, popular wedding dates and seasons (spring and fall especially) book out fast, and once a date is taken, it’s gone.
I recommend reaching out 9–12 months before your wedding if you’re getting married in peak season, and at least 6 months ahead for weekday or off-season weddings. If you’re a last-minute bride, still reach out – you might catch an opening due to reschedules or flexible timelines. Once your venue is booked, your makeup artist should be one of the next vendors you secure so you’re not scrambling later.
What’s the difference between a trial and day-of makeup?
Think of the trial as our dress rehearsal and your wedding day as the live performance.
At your bridal trial, we:
Talk through your wedding vibe, dress, hair, and any inspiration photos.
Discuss your skin type, sensitivities, and everyday makeup comfort level.
Try one or two variations (for example, softer vs slightly smokier eye, different lip options).
Take photos in natural and indoor light so you can see how everything reads.
The goal is to create a custom look that feels like you, photographs beautifully, and we both feel confident recreating on the wedding day.
On the day-of, there are no surprises. I’m working from notes, photos, and product choices we already dialed in at your trial. This keeps your timeline smooth and lets you relax, enjoy your morning, and trust that your look is exactly what you envisioned.
Will my makeup last through tears, heat, and dancing?
Yes – as long as we work together on prep and use the right products and techniques, your makeup is designed to last through a full wedding day.
Here’s how I build in longevity:
Skin prep that’s tailored to your skin type so products sit smoothly instead of sliding around.
Thin, layered applications (foundation, concealer, cream products) instead of one heavy layer.
Strategic setting: I lock in areas that tend to get oily or touched (T-zone, nose, chin) while keeping the skin looking like skin everywhere else.
Waterproof or long-wear products where it counts: mascara, liner, and certain complexion products.
Lashes that are secure but comfortable, so you’re not worrying about corners lifting mid-reception.
I’ll also walk you through what to include in your touch-up kit – usually a lip product, blotting papers, and sometimes a pressed powder – so you can refresh quickly between photos and dancing without disrupting the makeup underneath.
Can you work with my skin type and sensitivities?
Absolutely. One of my priorities as a makeup artist is making sure your skin feels as good as it looks.
Before your trial, I’ll ask about:
Your skin type (dry, oily, combination, sensitive, acne-prone, etc.).
Any known allergies or past reactions to products.
Current skincare or prescriptions you’re using.
During the trial, we can patch-test products if needed and pay close attention to how your skin responds. I build my kit with a range of skin-first, gentle formulas and options for different skin types, so we can choose products that are both flattering and comfortable for you. If you have a skincare product you love and trust, I’m often happy to incorporate it into your prep routine if it plays well under makeup.
What should I do to prep my skin before my bridal makeup?
Great makeup starts with well-prepped skin. You don’t need an elaborate 10-step routine; consistency and gentle care matter more than anything.
General guidelines I share with my brides:
Focus on a simple, consistent routine in the months leading up: cleanse, moisturize, SPF, and gentle exfoliation.
Avoid trying brand-new, intense treatments (like strong peels) right before the wedding.
The week of your wedding, prioritize hydration – drink water, moisturize, and don’t skip your routine.
Day-of, come with a clean, bare face (no SPF or heavy skincare unless we’ve discussed it) so I can prep you properly for long-wear makeup.
If you’d like a more detailed step-by-step, I can provide a personalized skin-prep plan after your trial.
Can you accommodate my bridal party as well?
Yes. I regularly work with bridal parties and can create a schedule that keeps everyone on time and relaxed. We’ll talk through:
How many people are receiving makeup.
What time you need to be ready by (for photos, first look, ceremony).
Whether we need an assistant for larger parties or tighter timelines.
From there, I’ll build a customized timeline so everyone knows when they’ll be in the chair, and you can enjoy a smooth, organized morning without rushing.
What if I don’t usually wear much makeup?
You’re in the right place. A big part of my work is helping brides feel like themselves, just a bit more polished and elevated.
If you’re not used to wearing makeup, I’ll:
Keep your base light and skin-like.
Focus on enhancing your natural features instead of transforming them.
Show you each step in the mirror so you feel comfortable with how it’s progressing.
Adjust anything that feels “too much” until it feels like you.
My goal is that when you look in the mirror on your wedding day, you recognize yourself – just glowy, confident, and ready to be photographed from every angle.
